Causes of Degenerative Discs

Lower back is the focusing point of a lot of mechanical stress and strain because of carrying the weight of the upper body, which always puts loads and pressure on the lower back. Spine consists of stacked one on top of the other 33 small bones called vertebrae bears all the upper body weight. A spongy cartilage sitting between two vertebra is called disc.Disc prevents the bony vertebrae from grinding against one another and acts as a shock absorber and helps us to keep our normal body bending and motions. With the aging process, these cushioning discs gradually shrink and wear away, a condition called Degenerative Disc Disease. Discs can also become injured or torn or weak. Sometimes the weakening of a disc can put pressure on its jelly-like center Nucleus causes bulging of the disc materials from inside the disc to press on the sensitive nerves or nerve roots that carry messages from different body parts to the brain. which is know as disc prolapse. Result can be the kind of excruciating pain on the nerve junction or the area that the nerve supplies. Disc prolapse is also know as herniated disc or slipped disc.

Sometimes a herniated disc in the lower back puts pressure on the nerve that extends down the spinal column commonly causes pain to radiate to the buttocks and all the way down the leg. This condition is refered as sciatica. This condition is often misguided or diagnosed late because it may not be associted with back pain.
